About Me

My name is Austin Williams. I was born and raised in Lansing, MI, but was lucky to have parents who refused to let me grow up a Michigan State fan. I graduated from Grand Valley State University in 2018 with a degree in Computer Information Systems and a minor in Business. At GVSU, I was vice president of our National Society of Black Engineers chapter and a university tour guide.

I worked for Dow Chemical in Midland, MI for over three years, originally in Data Management, but most recently in Analytics and Business Intelligence. A large part of my role at Dow deals with data visualization, which is where my interests in the intersection of data and design grew. I was drawn to UMSI because of the flexibility it granted students to combine interests in data science and user experience. Currently my long-term goals involve a career in user experience research, but am always open to learn about new opportunities.

I'm an avid sports fan, so much of my free time is spent rooting for UM and Detroit sports teams or playing in leagues myself. I'm a bogey golfer, a sometimes-decent basketball player, and a novice tennis player. Aside from that, I enjoy trying new recipes, dabbling in programming, and competing in basically anything (trivia, Euchre, table tennis, etc.).
